One of the most exciting things about Cretan wine is that many of its finest grapes grow nowhere else on earth. These indigenous varieties, shaped by millennia of Minoan, Byzantine, and Venetian winemaking tradition, are now earning global recognition. Here’s your essential guide:
White Varieties
Vidiano
Perhaps the rising star of all Cretan whites. Indigenous to Crete, cultivated mainly in Rethymno and Heraklion, Vidiano produces wines of remarkable aromatic complexity — think ripe peach, apricot, and citrus blossom, with a lush, oily texture. Some old vines date back nearly 80 years. Its ability to age gracefully is turning heads internationally.
Vilana
The most widely planted white variety on Crete, found across all four prefectures. Vilana produces fresh, floral, and lightly citrusy wines — perfect as a summer aperitif. It is the base of the PDO Peza white and plays a key role in PDO Sitia white.
Thrapsathiri
A delicate, aromatic variety often blended with Vilana (particularly in PDO Sitia). It adds freshness and floral lift to blends.
Dafni & Plyto
Two rare white varieties cultivated in the Heraklion area, producing wines in limited quantities with distinctive herbal, aromatic profiles — collector’s treasures for the adventurous wine lover.
Malvasia (Malvasia di Candia Aromatica)
Though it spread across the Mediterranean, Malvasia likely originated in Crete. The local variety is intensely fruity with a muscat-like sweetness, used in both dry and luscious sweet wines.
Red Varieties
Kotsifali
Grown exclusively in the Peza and Archanes zones, Kotsifali is pale in colour but rich in aromatics — plums, spice, and a warming high alcohol character. It is almost always blended with Mandilaria to build structure.
Mandilaria
The structural backbone of Cretan reds. Deep in colour, high in tannin and acidity, Mandilaria gives longevity and grip to blends with Kotsifali.
Liatiko
One of Greece’s oldest grape varieties. It offers transparency, elegance, and aromas of dried red fruits and herbs — some compare its style to Pinot Noir. Liatiko stars in PDO Dafnes (dry) and PDO Sitia (dry and sweet).
Romeiko
The most planted red variety in the Chania region, Romeiko is a true oddity — it can produce reds, rosés, whites, sparkling wines, and the traditional oxidative Mouravas/Marouvas style wine. A true shape-shifter of the Cretan vineyard.
These varieties are the DNA of Cretan wine culture. Seek them out — they offer flavours and stories you simply cannot find anywhere else.
